Leadership
Integrity
Community

Tim "Mac" McGlothlin has spent a lifetime serving others—as an educator, community leader, volunteer, business owner, mentor, and public servant. Born and raised in the small town of Montesano, Washington, Mac learned the values of hard work, service, and community from an early age. His father was a World War II veteran who served in the South Pacific, and those lessons of duty and commitment would shape Mac's life for decades to come.

As a young man, Mac excelled in academics, athletics, music, and leadership. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout, was recognized by Governor Dan Evans for outstanding volunteerism, and graduated with honors from Montesano High School, Grays Harbor College, Western Washington University, and Central Washington University, where he earned master's degrees in both Music and Education.

Music has always been one of Mac's passions. As a teenager, he performed throughout the Pacific Northwest in a rock-and-roll band, opening for nationally known acts and recording in Seattle. Over the years, he continued performing, teaching music, and sharing his love of music with generations of students.

In 1974, Mac and his wife, Laura Jo, made The Dalles their home. More than five decades later, they remain deeply rooted in the community they love. Together they have raised three children and now enjoy spending time with their grandchildren.

Mac began his career in The Dalles teaching instrumental music at The Dalles Junior High School before opening McGlothlin Music Company, a local business that served the community for many years. He later returned to education, serving as a teacher, principal, technology leader, and school administrator throughout the Columbia Gorge. His career included leadership roles at Columbia High School, North Wasco County School District, and regional education programs, earning recognition as Southwest Washington Principal of the Year and Washington State Principal of the Year for Science and Technology.

Service to the community has always been at the heart of Mac's work. He has served on numerous local boards and commissions, including the Chamber of Commerce, Wasco County Juvenile Services Commission, Mid-Columbia Regional Airport Commission, and youth leadership organizations. He has also been an active member of Lions Clubs International, receiving numerous honors for volunteer service at the local, state, and international levels.

Since 2010, Mac has proudly served the people of The Dalles on the City Council, including seven years as Council President. During his time in office, he has worked to strengthen public safety, support local businesses, improve infrastructure, and promote thoughtful growth while preserving the character and values that make The Dalles special.

Known for his accessibility, compassion, and willingness to help others, Mac believes leadership is about service. Whether mentoring students, volunteering in the community, supporting families in need, or working on behalf of residents at City Hall, he has always focused on putting people first.

Mac often says that if one life has breathed easier because he lived, then he has known success. That belief continues to guide his commitment to serving The Dalles and the community he has proudly called home for more than 50 years.
